Building Typologies

Which building typology you are researching?
The building typology that I will be researching is an educational facility.

Why are you researching this building typology?
I’ve noticed throughout the site analysis that there are a lot of art galleries, restaurants, and bars, which means competition. The last thing I would like to do is compete. So what came across my mind is incorporating a facility with one of these three activities, which will eventually turn into a school.

What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research i.e.   Museum for dance, school for digital media?
The facility that I will be providing for Chelsea is a school for modern art and design.

What are the examples that you will be researching… list the examples, location and architect?

SDU Campus Kolding:
Architect: Henning Larsen Architects.          Location: Denmark.

Art School Carcassonne:
Architect: Jacques Ripault Architecture.      Location: Carcassonne, France.

Southwest International Ethnic Culture and Art Center
Architect: Tongji Architectural Design.         Location: Kunming Chenggong.

Columbia University Medical & Graduate Building

Faculty of Law, University of Sydney
Architect: Francis Jones Morehen Thorp.      Location: Sydney Australia.

Bauhuas
Architect: Walter Gropius.                             Location: Dessau, Germany.

What are your goals for working with this building type?
The goal that I’m trying to purse is the building should fit the site instead of fight it. It should be a building that can be associated to the community. It’s going to be a place where all students are welcome and happy to be here and ready to learn new things.

What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building?
A few of the programs that may be includes would be design studios, fabrication rooms, and computer labs.

  1. Hi,

you chose a pretty diverse number of types of precedents, not all are art and design schools. As you write at the end, for the programme design studios, fabrication rooms and computer labs are essential. I also think it is essential, and also to see the relationship between computer and modelling in material. You may want to look at historical examples as well, and how this evolved since the Bauhaus.
Looking forward for the analysis of plans from this point of view.
