Impression:
The first impression I got once we arrived
at the Meatpacking district was an active and alive place. Walking inside the
market, it felt like everything was being connected even though every store
sold different products, alive and active people walking in and out of the stores.
I still had the same exact impression leaving the market and being on the
highline. But it wasn’t until we got to Pier 57 where my impression changed
drastically from alive/active to lonely, abandoned, separated, and left behind.
My collage is trying to signify loneliness, abandoned, separated, and left
behind. The child in the center is representing loneliness and being left
behind, in which I felt Pier 57 looked like. The Meatpacking district goes from
an active and live place to an old, lonely and left behind pier. The railroad
tracks, rocks, and forest is representing abandoned, it’s like this feeling
about pier 57 where nobody really knows what it is, not an active place but yet
it exists. And the dark hands represent separation, I feel like pier 57 is not
being connected to the Meatpacking district, it’s like there is two different
districts in one.
Active/ Alive:
I choose the two words active and alive
based on the whole site which is the Meatpacking district. It’s an active
place, there are a lot of restaurants, bars, clothing shops, and art galleries.
It’s alive because the district its self is very crowded, in every street and
avenue you walk on, you are always stepping or bumping into someone. There are restaurants,
bars, and clubs that are open until late nights. So what my collage is representing
is activeness and liveness. I have a heart beat going across the collage to
represent liveness, the heart beat doesn’t stop it keeps going, in order to be
alive your heart beat needs to be beating. I also represent liveness by putting
the dim lights in the background, I believe in order to be alive you need light
to see and it needs to be bright. To me alive also means being happy and joyful
that’s why I have the circles in different colors, it also represents light. I represent
activeness by having the two women exercising in a sunset. But in order to be
active you need light and need to be alive so that’s where everything comes
into play the heartbeat, the different light colors, and the dim lights in the
background.
Program
of the Project:
The program of my project is an art and
design educational facility. It’s a school where you are able to perfection
your art skills, a place where you learn how to design not just in an architectural
way but also in an artistic way. It’s a school that shows you how to express
yourself in an artful manner and makes you see outside the box. So what my
collage is trying to portray is art and design. I have a flower in a sunrise
background representing art, to me art is the beauty of nature, and the flower
also has a vivid color to it, this is helping it standout in another way making
it feel alive. I believe art should always standout, in every possible way. The
flower is resting in a wood fence because beauty, nature, and art should never
be tired in other words it shouldn’t go to waste, it should always be alive. Art
is all about different colors light or dark, that’s why I have the sunrise in
the background giving it a very bright light in the center and the ocean in a
darker tone. I have a building model siting on a floor plan portraying design. It’s
in the sky because I believe architects are always designing to create new
futures, and you always look up to see or create your future you never look
down. And the building model and floor plan are sitting right on top of the
bright light because in order to see future you need to see light. I also have
the paint brushes representing art. These brushes function as art because you
need color to create art, the brushes also function as pens to create
floor plans. And I believe the brushes is what draws everything, what gives
color to everything, what designs everything, and what creates everything, so it’s
not just a tool to draw but it’s also a tool to create.
